Numbers, counting & quantities - Learning numbers in a playful way
Learn numbers in preschool and kindergarten with high-quality products from TimeTEX! Encourage children's natural curiosity about maths and help your preschool and kindergarten children learn to count and learn about numbers with our wide range of materials. In our range you will find number games for toddlers and preschoolers, to help them develop a good understanding of numbers in an easy and fun way.
In early maths education, it is important to engage children holistically with their whole body and all their senses and to develop a basic understanding of quantities and numbers in a playful way. This is achieved with our high-quality educational games, such as dominoes, tactile boards, number bricks and much more.
When do children learn numbers?
Children have a natural interest in counting, numbers and quantities. Counting not only teaches children about numbers, but also trains their logical thinking. Mathematical skills develop surprisingly early. In fact, toddlers start counting at the age of 3. A four-year-old child can usually count up to 5. By the time they start school, children can count up to 10, and some even up to 20, passing through five stages:
- The first stage begins from the age of two to two and a half. At this stage, the sequence of number words is only available as a whole. Number words are spoken, but their actual meaning is not yet recognised.
- Individual number words can already be clearly distinguished. At the age of three and a half to four years, this ability is developed to such an extent that children can actually point to objects and use the number words to count in the correct order.
- The third stage is completed by the age of 5. Children understand that they have to start counting with one and that the last number mentioned indicates the number of objects.
- The fourth stage begins at the age of 6. Children can name and count numbers. The first simple additions are possible.
- The fifth stage starts during the school years. Children then can already count backwards.
Learning numbers & counting with all the senses
Children learn about numbers in kindergarten in different ways. Developing a good understanding of numbers and quantities at pre-school age is crucial for maths performance at primary school. Play, fun and movement should be at the forefront of learning about counting and numbers in kindergarten and preschool, so that these first basic maths skills are combined with positive experiences.
Number games in kindergarten are a good way to familiarise children with numbers at an early age. When it comes to numbers in kindergarten, for example, our stacking numbers, tactile boards and many other products in our range can be used to create holistic learning opportunities. This allows children to familiarise themselves with numbers using all their senses. Young kindergarten and pre-school children can literally "grasp" the numbers in a playful way!
