Project ”Time” in kindergarten
Children experience time in different contexts from an early age on: their own growth, the recurrence of birthdays, the different times of day. Children first have to learn to relate these individual experiences to the abstract concept of time. They gradually develop an understanding of the division of time into seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years. You can help your children in nursery with this learning process with a project on the subject of time and clocks.
Our wide range of hourglasses, learning clocks and timers will help you to plan exciting activities that are fun and allow children to experience time. With the help of such a project, children get an idea of how time passes and learn to describe it using words such as second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year. They also learn to relate events to each other and to use words such as later, earlier, yesterday, tomorrow, etc. This gives them a sense of orientation in their world and helps them to become more independent. At the same time, the children's vocabulary is expanded and consolidated.
Topic “clock” in kindergarten - measuring time
How long does a minute, 10 minutes or a quarter of an hour last? When are we allowed to go outside into the garden? How long can I hop on one leg? In kindergarten, there are various ways to help children experience and visualise the passage of time by measuring it:
Hourglasses are particularly suitable for younger children who are not yet able to read numbers. Children can experience the passage of time directly through the movement of the sand. Children can use hourglasses to develop a sense for smaller periods of time.
There are many ways to use hourglasses in everyday kindergarten life:
- as an incentive to complete a task in a certain amount of time
- to counter impatience and repetitive questions: we will go to the garden in 15 minutes
- for movement games: jump like a frog for 1 minute
- to define breaks
We offer models with different cycle times for different time periods.
Timers promote understanding and responsibility for the passage of time, time use and time management by showing the amount of time remaining. These clocks are particularly suitable for completing tasks within a certain time. The coloured disc allows children to see at a glance how much time they have left to complete their task. These clocks are a useful tool for teaching children to learn to estimate how much time they have. This gives even younger children an approach to learning to organise their time.
Educational clocks help children to learn and understand the time. With the help of the clock and its hands, children work out what units of time there are.
They learn that the big hand shows the minutes and the small hand shows the hours. To practise reading the clock, it is helpful for children to start with full hours by assigning the hands to the different numbers on the clock face. Once they have learnt to recognise the hours on the learning clock, they can move on to practising reading half and quarter hours. Children can easily identify the minutes by the lines between the numbers, so that they can learn to read them accurately. With all these aids, children will find it easy to read the time correctly and recognise it at a glance.
