The ladybird breeding set contains lots of other great materials relating to the spotted beetle. The set includes copy templates as well as interactive exercises that can be carried out on the computer. With the Hagemann magnifying glass box, pupils can take a close look at the fascinating beetles. The set is also reusable, only the ladybird larvae need to be ordered again.
When breeding ladybirds at primary school, you can ideally combine theory and practice. Just like with our other animal and plant cultivation sets for butterflies, ladybirds and many other animals such as ants or earthworms. In addition, the pupils learn to take responsibility for a joint project, which can immensely strengthen the class community.
Ladybird life cycle
In order to breed ladybirds, it is important to know about their natural life cycle. The life cycle can be used in class to illustrate the development of all insects. You can also discuss this with the children to learn about the developmental stages of insects. In spring, the female ladybird lays her eggs on a plant, which then stick to the bottom side of a leaf. By purchasing a ladybird breeding set, you can skip this step and order living ladybird larvae directly.
The plant usually grows near a plant louse colony, as the spotted ladybirds and their larvae mainly eat aphids. After 30 to 60 days, the larva pupates and metamorphosis into a beetle begins. After four to five days, the beetles emerge from the pupa. Initially, their shells are still soft and the beetles are yellowish in colour, their typical red colour and the dots only appear after the wing cover has hardened. You can also observe this process with a ladybird breeding set.
A joint project such as breeding ladybirds also strengthens the class community and is great fun for the children! Ordering ladybird larvae is quick and easy at TimeTEX!
Ladybirds: the all-natural pest fighter
Ladybirds in the school garden or in the garden at home are a great enrichment: the beneficial insects combat aphids and other pests in a natural way. Ladybirds are beneficial insects in the home garden or school garden and are the natural predators of aphids. An adult ladybird is capable of devouring up to 50 aphids a day. Ordering ladybird larvae is therefore a gentle and natural way of controlling pests.
During their approximately four-week development phase, ladybird larvae can even eat over 500 aphids. Adult female ladybirds lay up to 40 clutches with hundreds of eggs from April to summer. If you buy a few ladybirds, this is enough to combat an aphid infestation. The offspring of a single beetle can eat up to 100,000 aphids! Buy ladybirds now and enrich your garden or school garden.
You can see, if you order ladybird larvae, you can get aphid infestations under control quickly and efficiently. And without any environmentally harmful products! Use ladybirds as beneficial insects for pest control in your garden now.
Buy a home for ladybirds
With our wooden ladybird hotel, you can offer the cute beetles a lovely home. You can prepare it inside together with the pupils, for example with leaves, straw or hay.
