What is felting?
Along with knitting and crocheting , felting is one of the oldest ways of working with textiles. However, as wool rots quickly, there is little certainty as to when felting was actually first used. However, researchers assume that shepherds felted over 8000 years ago. Today, young and old alike enjoy this textile processing method. Felting is particularly popular with children in nursery and primary schools. This is because children can express themselves creatively and create their own fantastic works of art. A distinction is usually made between wet felting and dry felting.
Felting with nursery and primary school children - what are the advantages?
Felting not only allows children to express themselves creatively and create great, unique items, but there are also many other benefits to handicrafts such as felting. Whether felting at school or felting with kindergarten children.
Here is an overview:
- Training concentration
- Promotion of attention
- Calming effect
- Switching off
- Support for fine motor skills
- Promotes logical thinking
- Creativity
- Strengthened self-confidence
- Stamina
- Brightens the mood
- Sensory perception is promoted
→ Promotes child development
Wet felting with children:
If you want to start felting with young children or beginners, you should start with wet felting. This method is considered easier and gives children a first feel for felting. Materials: This is what you will need for wet felting with children:
Materials: This is what you will need for wet felting with children:
- Base and draining surface
- Olive soap or curd soap (grater if required)
- Fleece wool or new wool
- Old tea towel
- Kettle
- Bowl with warm water
- Vinegar
Step by step instructions:
1. make the soapsuds:
To start, grate the olive or curd soap into a bowl of warm water. Continue until everything foams well. It is important to keep the water warm at all times, adding a little warm water if necessary. Otherwise the felting process will not work. But be careful: the water must not be too hot!
2. felting:
Now it's time to felt. The children first tear up the wool, place it in the palm of their hand and moisten it with soapy water (make sure not to use too much water here). Then it's time to shape it. For example, if the children are felting a ball, they roll the wool with their hands, adding a little soapy water if needed. If necessary, add more felt and soapy water to make the ball bigger.
Vinegar bath:
Once the desired size and shape has been achieved, the felted piece is rinsed with water to remove the soap residue. The felted piece is then placed in vinegar to remove all the soap. Now rinse again and place on a towel to dry. The masterpiece is finished.
Ideas for felting with children:
Handicrafts such as embroidery and weaving can be used to create great things. But felting can also create real eye-catchers.
Small colourful balls that you design together with the children are a good place to start. These can be threaded on a string, for example, and used as a necklace. They can also be used to make bracelets.
More felting ideas with children: A finger puppet
Material:
- Standard wet felting material
- Meterials for making the finger puppet
To make the finger puppet, the children wrap felt in the colour of their choice around their finger. Do this so that there are three layers around the finger. Then moisten the wool with the soap and water mixture and work it into the felt with circular movements. Start lightly and then work more vigorously. It is important that the children work evenly.
After moulding, washed out the finger puppet and start designing. There are no limits to creativity. For example, scraps of wool can be used for hair and small eyes can be glued on. Children can also cut out a beak or ears from a piece of felt and glue them on.
