How do hourglasses work?
An hourglass consists of two glass containers that are connected by a narrow opening. One of the glasses contains sand, which slowly trickles through the opening into the other glass. The speed at which the sand runs off depends on the size of the grains of sand and the gradient of the opening. The time can be measured by simply turning the hourglass over and letting the sand flow from one glass into the other.
Why are hourglasses ideal for children?
Anyone who works with younger children in particular knows that children have their own feeling of time and like to do things at their own pace. In principle, this is right, but developing and strengthening children's sense of time is important for their personal development. Hourglasses can be very helpful for children. They give pupils a fixed time frame and provide structure and security.
Through the transparent glass of the hourglass, you can see exactly how the coloured sand runs off in real time. In this way, they learn step by step how to complete tasks within a set period of time. What's more, unlike a time clock, they can turn the hourglass over themselves and thus control the time measurement independently.
Another big advantage is that completing a task while the timer is running is a fun challenge. This makes it particularly exciting and adds an extra fun factor. It's an easy way to boost your pupils' motivation. And, at the same time, children learn to estimate how long they need for certain tasks. This also boosts their self-confidence and encourages self-reflection. Teachers can use the practical tools to set the break time, for example, so that pupils can see for themselves when lessons start again. This prevents lengthy discussions with pupils about whether the break is really over. Teachers can also use our "mega hourglass" in XXL format, which is 16 cm high and has a running time of 15, to set a time frame for quiet work. All this helps pupils to develop a sense of time in a playful way. The hourglass can therefore also be ideally combined with a signal transmitter & rest signals.
For all these reasons, it is a clear recommendation for teachers, educators and parents to use hourglasses as a tool to help children develop and strengthen their own sense of time.
Games and activities with hourglasses
There are many games and activities that can be played with hourglasses to develop children's sense of time. For example, children can try to complete a task before the sand has completely run out. The hourglass can just as easily be used at home for homework.
An even more playful option could be an hourglass-relay-race-game. To do this, divide the children into teams and place hourglasses with different running times at different stations in the classroom. Each team has to complete a station and complete a task within the given hourglass time before moving on to the next station. The team that completes the tasks the fastest and successfully runs through the most stations wins the relay race! This game not only promotes time management and teamwork, but also provides plenty of excitement and fun!
What types of hourglasses are there?
Just as there is generally a large selection of teaching materials for elementary school, there are also very different types of hourglasses in many different colours, sizes and optionally with great effects, depending on the intended use. Our paradoxical "Contra" hourglass is definitely an eye-catcher, a very special model: the sand in the liquid hourglass trickles upwards rather than downwards within seven minutes. This is particularly fascinating for the little ones and attracts their attention. This striking physical phenomenon makes this model exceptional.
As a further eye-catcher, we have colourful hourglasses for children in our range. Both the case and the sand are available in different colours, depending on the model. In the past, hourglasses were often made of wood or brass. Today, the preferred materials are robust plastic combined with real glass or sturdy acrylic glass. Their running time varies from 30 seconds to several minutes. This is why we at TimeTEX have individual hourglasses as well as sets in our range. Our hourglass sets are supplied in a practical plastic case. This is not only helpful for storage, but also ideal for transportation to school or kindergarten, for example. That is why our 20-piece hourglass set is our bestseller. It contains relatively small hourglasses for children, in blue, black, yellow, green and red, which are already familiar to the young target group from board games, for example.
At TimeTEX you will also find other eye-catchers such as our unique colour play hourglass made of glass, which is equipped with a large light-emitting diode. It impresses with its fascinating light effects, which attract children and are guaranteed to prevent boredom. The ten minutes it takes for the hourglass to run through will fly by.
Our large "Giga hourglass" is particularly versatile and is for example available in a 30-minute version. Just like our "XL hourglass", which you can also buy as a set.
How do you choose the perfect hourglass for children?
When choosing an hourglass for children, it is important to consider the size of the hourglasses, the time and the design. Larger hourglasses can be easily seen by all children in the classroom and are ideal for use in schools or kindergartens.
The turnaround time should match the requirements of the activity for which it is being used. For example, a longer cycle time may be suitable for group work or silent work, while a shorter cycle time can be used for short exercises or games. The design of the hourglass should be appealing and child-friendly to attract the children's attention and interest.
Why are TimeTEX hourglasses particularly suitable for use in elementary school?
At elementary school, many pupils are probably still used to being able to take as long as they want to do everything at home. However, this is impossible to implement in a class of over 20 pupils. To ensure structured lessons, good time management is a must. Children should slowly develop their own sense of time and, ideally, their own time management. And you can easily train this with the help of colourful timepieces such as hourglasses, which is particularly practical if the little ones have not yet fully mastered the normal clock. Our larger hourglasses are ideal for use at school. When they are placed on the desk, they are also clearly visible to pupils in the last row. The colourful design attracts the attention of primary school pupils and is very appealing. You are sure to keep the attention of your pupils.
Our recommendation: Hourglass sets are perfect forgroup work at school, as each group has its own timer. You should therefore definitely use them in everyday school life. Buy high quality TimeTEX hourglasses at low prices now.
How does the hourglass become a helpful companion in everyday life?
Our hourglasses can be used in a variety of ways, not only at school but also in everyday life, for example in the bathroom to practise brushing teeth thoroughly. A three-minute hourglass can also be very helpful when used as an egg timer to cook the perfect breakfast egg. At least if you like your eggs soft-boiled. The timers with a longer time frame can also be used as a tea timer. Our products are therefore also ready for use in the kitchen.
Hourglasses are also a useful all-rounder outside the kitchen: in the bathroom, for example. After all, you should brush your teeth for at least three minutes at a time. But most children probably have no real idea of this yet. After all, it's a well-known fact that things you might not like doing take longer and longer. Now you could set a simple timer as a solution. But that's not exactly exciting. A three-minute hourglass as a stopwatch, which the little ones can operate themselves, is much more interesting. And they have something to watch while their teeth are being brushed. They also internalise how long they need to brush to have healthy teeth. Another practical side effect: parents are spared the discussion as to whether their children have really brushed their teeth for the required three minutes.
Our products can also be helpful to practise hand washing. The timer should always be ready for use and clearly visible at the edge of the sink. This makes it easy to internalise how to measure time. You can see exactly how long it takes to soap your hands well and then wash them thoroughly. Our hourglasses for children can therefore also be used in kindergarten to teach hygiene.
