Tranquillity through meditation
The bustling everyday life in nurseries is a lot of fun, but it is also very strenuous for the little ones. Rest periods are therefore a must. They create a more relaxed relationship without over-excited children. But as an educator, how do you calm all the children? This is particularly successful, for example, through meditations in the form of so-called sound stories. In such stories, you as a parent or educator read a story. In appropriate places, you or the children create a sound with a singing bowl, other signals or instruments for children.
The background noise makes the story very lively and captivates the little ones. Especially when children are able to participate themselves. Therefore, children get into rest periods more easily.
A singing bowl is very suitable for children in kindergarten. You only need the bowl, a pillow and a mallet. This makes it very easy for kids to handle.
But why should you choose a singing bowl and not another sound instrument such assound sticks?
The use of singing bowls in kindergarten and school allows children completely new sensory experiences. The little ones learn how it affects the sound when they make the bowl sound stronger or softer or vary with the mallet and bowls. This allows them to produce brighter or deeper sounds. The duration and volume can also vary.
The biggest factor: children feel the vibrations of the singing bowl directly on their bodies when they hold the bowl in their hands. This is a unique feature of the bowls and can be a defining experience for children with hearing impairments, for example. The vibrations can also be made visible by pouring water into the bowl.
Singing bowls (sets) as an acoustic signal in lessons
As a teacher, it is an important task to support all children in their development. Many educators therefore use, among other things, sound bowls. These are useful to help primary school children or pupils, who receive special education, to come to rest. Our TimeTEX sounding bowls are particularly important when dealing with first-graders. Young students in particular must first get used to sitting quietly and attentively in their place during lessons and listening to the teacher.
Of course, as a teacher, you can also try to calm the children down by talking and admonish them. However, you already communicate a lot with language during lessons, whereas a singing bowl gives a different, interesting acoustic signal.
Use the sound of the singing bowl as a signal for resting phases resulting in not having to shout out loud and to protect your voice. Plus, you send the same signal every time. Try to hit the bowl the same way each time to establish signals. The sound has an automatic calming effect on children. For example, they can use it as a calm signal with the meaning that the pupils have to be quiet at the latest when there is no more sound to be heard. This saves you from talking and admonishing.
As a first step, you should get your students used to the acoustic signal and explain to them what it means. Make it clear that the tone of the singing bowl represents periods of rest and concentration. Later you can use different sounds as additional signals. Or you can use our TimeTEX Bowl Sets, which produce different sounds. In addition, our sets contain different mallets, so you have great possibilities of variation.
Other possibilities of usage at school:
- Gentle signal to end a test or to regain attention after a strong concentration phase
- End and start of a studying unit
- Interruptions in group phases
To give children these signals, you can come up with different stop techniques. For example, you can hit the bowl once for the end of a test and twice for resting periods. They can also produce shorter and longer tones. If you want to beat the instrument and stop the sound in the meantime, you can pause the bowl briefly with your hand. This allows you to stop the vibration.
At TimeTEX you can buy different bowls and also singing bowls in a set. Our products are available in the usual high quality. The singing bowls, such as our model “Nepal”, are made of up to seven different metals.
