Learning to Handle Numbers with Dienes Material
Dienes material is a proven tool that enables children to develop a better understanding of numbers and their relationships. With these materials, teachers can teach children in a playful way how to deal with "large numbers" and how the decimal system works. From tens bars to thousand cubes, you'll find everything you need for using this great material. But what exactly is the decimal system and where does it come from?
Decimal System - What Is It?
The decimal system helps students "mentally structure number spaces." The decimal system, originally from India, also known as the base-10 system or decimal system, is a numbering system with a base of 10. The decimal numbering system is also a positional notation system. Essential for this is the bundling principle, with which the digits 1 to 9, as well as zero, are bundled. These numbers are then bundled into place values (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions...). You can see: With the help of the system, students can keep an overview of the number space. In addition, decimal numbers or decimal numbers can also be represented.
Advantages of the Decimal System:
- Relationships between numbers become clear
- Orientation in (large) number spaces is facilitated
- Enables arithmetic with large numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication / times tables, division)
You see: The decimal numbering system is an important learning content in the subject of mathematics for a reason. It supports the building of a solid foundation as a basis in mathematics, from which students benefit throughout their school life.
History of the Decimal Number System
The present decimal system with a place value system originally comes from India and was passed on to Europe through the Arab world. The system is based primarily on ten digits and tens, which can be explained by finger counting with ten fingers. The digits used in the decimal numbering system are called decimal digits. Nowadays, the decimal numbering system is an international standard. It facilitates arithmetic with large numbers and provides orientation in number spaces. Therefore, this proven system is an important content in elementary school mathematics classes.
Dienes Material for Discovering the Decimal System
What is Dienes material? Dienes material is made of high-quality wood, emphasizing durability and sustainability. With Dienes material, a decimal number system becomes an optical and haptic learning experience for children. Touching and trying it out with the material is easy. Multisensory learning is ideally promoted with the material. Positive learning effects are guaranteed with this.
The Dienes material is divided into various place values. It includes ones cubes, tens rods or bars, hundreds plates, and thousand cubes made of wood. This makes orientation in the number space up to 1000 child's play. The material was specially developed for learning the decimal system in mathematics classes in elementary school and has been tested for many years. It can be easily integrated into teaching. For example, it can be used for a demonstration of number decomposition or group work where students can try it out for themselves - Dienes material makes it possible.
Advantages of Dienes Material:
- Playfully learn the decimal system
- It is uncomplicated and clear
- Large numbers can be simplified
- Decomposing numbers is easy with it
- The value of a number can be represented
For learning and teaching about the decimal system and decimal numbers, you won't find a more proven or better-suited material than Dienes material. Nevertheless, we also offer other helpful teaching materials in our range, such as our math dice, which are ideal as supplements.
Dice, Numbers & Colorful Colors
In addition to the classic Dienes material made of wood, there are now also variants made of sturdy plastic. The colorful math dice are very appealing to children and support the visualization of (decimal) numbers. For a particularly clear representation of decimal numbers, for example, a number flip chart is perfect. The number space up to 20, 100 & up to 1000 becomes clear and understandable with it. Also from Dienes, there is the extra-large whiteboard calculation board. This wipeable decimal system table supports the decomposition of numbers, but with the Dienes material board, arithmetic operations in the area of addition and subtraction are also easy to do.
