Learning to Tell Time in Elementary School
Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or appointments at specific times, time accompanies and determines our entire daily routine. It's no wonder that learning about time and clocks in elementary school is an integral part of science education. Here, you'll gain fundamental knowledge about time, learning to read the clock, and telling time. Learning to tell time significantly contributes to children's development, as it gradually makes them more independent.
In the TimeTEX range, we have several teaching materials related to learning about time. Playful and lively - with the right material in class, learning about time becomes fun for children, and the knowledge is firmly reinforced. In addition, you will find creative teaching materials online on topics such as annual calendars as well as weather and seasons!
Fostering Children's Sense of Time
Generally, students should be able to read the clock by the 2nd grade in elementary school. While some children can read the clock before starting school or already have some prior knowledge, others learn about telling time with science education. Like with many other skills, some children find it easier, while it takes a bit longer for others to remember the terms and read the clock correctly. How easy or difficult children find learning to tell time can also depend on how much they have developed a sense of time. Children's sense of time can be easily fostered by mentioning various time units and their significance in everyday life, such as: "Dinner will be ready in 5 minutes!" or "Grandma will visit in half an hour." Our child-friendly card games are also suitable for this purpose.
Teaching Time: Making It Fun for Children
As a teacher, how can I best teach my students about time and learning to tell time? And how can I, as a parent, support my child? When learning about time, it's particularly important to proceed step by step to avoid overwhelming the little ones. With our tips and tricks, you'll get helpful information on how to easily teach children about time:
- 1. To increase the fun factor and motivation, we recommend making a clock with the children beforehand.
- 2. When learning about time, always start with a classic analog clock with a clear clock face.
- 3. Learning to read the clock begins with the hour and minute hands: Start by explaining that the small hand is for the hours and the big hand is for the minutes. Both move clockwise.
- 4. Now explain what a full hour is: While the big hand indicates the full hour, the small hand reveals which hour it is.
- 5. Then, turn the small hand to different times that the children have to name.
- 6. Now, introduce half and quarter hours: Let the children set the times themselves using learning clocks or demonstration clocks and practice a lot to reinforce what they've learned.
- 7. Next, focus on the minutes: Explain that an hour has 60 minutes and use 5-minute intervals for practice.
- 8. Finally, introduce the second hand.
- 9. Lastly, teach the children about time intervals and the 24-hour format. Explain that a day doesn't have 12 hours, but 24 hours, and counting goes up to 24 or 0. While we say 7 o'clock in the morning, we say 19 o'clock in the evening, and so on.
Our tip! Practice makes perfect! Incorporate telling time into your lessons or everyday situations as often as possible, and occasionally ask what time it is.
Funny Helpers for Learning about Time
Remembering all the new terms and at the same time reading the clock correctly is often not that easy for many children. And then they also have to know the difference between analog and digital. To make it easier for students to learn about time and at the same time provide fun and motivation, we have proven products in our range, such as learning clocks and demonstration clocks. But we also have fun learning games, such as the time domino or the learning game ball. This way, students' knowledge can be playfully assessed.
