Why is learning to write so important?
Learning to write is not only a useful skill but also promotes attention, methodical thinking, and memory. Learning to write letters also trains fine motor skills and stimulates brain activity.
Our brain is really challenged when writing by hand. Four areas in both hemispheres of the brain become active while learning to write. They process:
- The movement of the hand when writing
- The recognition of word types & sentence structure in German writing
- The meaning of the words
- Combining individual letters into a coherent word
All of this requires a stronger networking of the brain, so learning to read and write promotes the development of the child's brain. Therefore, reading games and other games should be part of the daily routine in grades 1, 2, and 3.
Additionally, learning to read and write is an essential step in learning. Handwritten notes are retained in memory longer. From a learning psychology perspective, being able to write fluidly by hand is invaluable. When you take notes on what you hear, filter it, and summarize it in your own words, you are already engaging with the content and remembering it better. Practicing writing a lot to write fluidly is therefore very important in the first school year.
Tips for learning to write and learning letters
Learning to write can be quite challenging for children at first, as it involves learning all the letters and practicing writing a lot. Holding the pen correctly, keeping within the lines of the writing practice books, not smudging, and so on can be a small challenge, but children will quickly master it!
The first step is for children to learn the alphabet and thus the individual letters. A for Ape, B for Bear, and so on. The individual letters must be practiced so that the kids can later write whole words fluently. It is recommended to cover one letter in each lesson and assign it as homework.
You can support the kids with writing boards, writing practice books, and writing exercise books, because practice makes perfect! We have many great materials for practicing writing.
At what age can children start learning to write?
When children start school, their knowledge of reading and writing can vary greatly. Some children may already know both because they showed an early interest in learning to read and write or because they learned it together with older siblings.
Others may already know the alphabet or parts of it, as letters can be introduced early during active reading. Some children may have no prior knowledge at all. That's not a problem, as the enthusiasm for learning to read and write usually comes quickly in the first grade.
As you can see, children can start practicing reading and writing even before school, especially in preschool, as many kids begin to show interest in letters and writing at that age.
History of writing – When did humanity learn to read and write?
When practicing writing together, you can also cover the history of writing to convey to children the immense significance of writing.
The first widely recognized writing systems emerged from the 4th millennium BC in what is now the Middle East. Around 2700 BC, cuneiform script was established in Mesopotamia, mainly used for bookkeeping. This shows how important learning to read and write was for daily life even back then. At that time, the characters were mainly carved into soft clay or stone.
In parallel, hieroglyphs developed in ancient Egypt, with the first finds dating back to around 3200 BC. The Egyptians believed that their writing was a gift from the gods, which is why hieroglyphs are often found on the sanctuaries of that time. Learning hieroglyphs cannot be compared to learning our modern letters: the number of characters used increased over time to more than 5000. Today's children have it much easier with our alphabet! The Egyptians wrote not only on stone and clay but also on papyrus, leather, and linen.
For European writing, the Phoenician alphabet is particularly important, later adopted by the Greeks. It initially consisted only of consonants and was later supplemented with vowels by the Greeks. The letters that children learn in school today developed further through the Romans, into the Middle Ages, when Charlemagne introduced a Western unified script, and through a writing reform in the Renaissance to become the letters we learn to write today.
Throughout all this time, learning to read and write was always reserved for a small elite, which is almost unimaginable today when learning to write is an absolute necessity for children!
Discover practical practice materials on reading and writing, as well as learning letters at TimeTEX. After all, it is of immense importance in elementary school that students learn to write in German.
