Lengths in Elementary School: Measuring, Converting & Comparing
Stride length, finger width, or hand span - While lengths were once measured using body parts, today there are standardized units of measurement such as kilometers, meters, decimeters, centimeters & millimeters. For children to measure, compare, and calculate lengths in elementary school, they need to convert lengths. Lengths are learned in elementary school just like volume and are further explored in higher grades.
Learning Lengths from 1st to 4th Grade
Children start learning to measure lengths in elementary school as early as 1st and 2nd grade. The focus is particularly on allowing kids to explore different length measurements interactively so they can develop a sense of size. Using various measuring devices such as rulers or folding rulers, they learn to measure and compare lengths in elementary school and name the measuring instruments.
In 3rd grade, what has been learned is reinforced. Additionally, students learn to calculate with lengths in 3rd grade and convert them. In 4th grade math lessons, the focus is on converting different units, calculating with decimal numbers, and calculating areas.
By the end of 4th grade, students should be able to:
- Know the most important units of length
- Understand the difference between the metric system and other length systems
- Convert lengths in elementary school
- Know and use measuring instruments for measuring lengths in elementary school
- Draw lengths to scale
In our online assortment, teachers can find everything they need for "length measurements in elementary school". To make it easier for children to start with the topic of lengths and sizes, our child-friendly materials such as chips, tape measures, measuring cups, and much more are suitable. They are perfect for making your lesson unit visual and increasing the joy of measuring lengths in elementary school.
