Calculating with Time – An Important Topic for Elementary School
Calculating time – Being able to manage time is very important in everyday life. This can start in the morning with brushing teeth using a children's sand timer. Classes start at eight, for example, children have playdates at 3 PM, and how long is a five-minute break? How do you set an alarm clock? How long does it take to get to the playground?
In everyday life and at school, calculating time is constantly needed, so it is important that children master calculating with time and time intervals confidently. For example, calculating with time units will later be very important in science subjects like chemistry and physics.
By calculating with time units, children's sense of time is strengthened, which will also reflect in their time management. A confident handling of time also allows for a bit more independence and thus self-confidence for the children!
Learning to Calculate with Time, These Are the Learning Objectives:
- Confidently mastering, converting, and estimating time units (hours, minutes, seconds…)
- Learning time-related terms and practicing calculations (quarter past, half past, quarter to…)
- Learning to read the clock, being able to tell the time
- Understanding, calculating, and confidently handling time intervals (for example, adding and subtracting)
- Understanding the difference between a point in time and a time span (For example: The hour starts at eight o'clock. It lasts 45 minutes…)
- Strengthening sense of time and training good time management
Calculating with time may seem complex to students at first glance, but because time calculation is so relevant to everyday life, children find it relatively easy and also a lot of fun!
Mastering Time Calculation Confidently – The Advantages
- Developing and strengthening a sense of time
- Learning time management, useful for example in dividing time during independent work
- Children learn to understand fixed structures
- Students become more independent
