What is Montessori education?
Montessori education was founded by Maria Montessori. She was born in Italy in 1870. She was one of the first women ever to gain a doctorate in medicine. The impetus for the development of Montessori material came from her work on the psychiatric ward of a hospital. There she worked with mentally handicapped children. She quickly realized that they were by no means mentally underdeveloped, but had simply lacked any support. Maria Montessori therefore began to develop Montessori materials.
Maria Montessori's method focuses primarily on the needs, talents and gifts of the individual child. Montessori teachers and educators believe that children learn best at their own pace and in their own way. Children should be encouraged to determine the pace, topic and repetition of a lesson independently. This helps them to internalize what they have learned. As a starting point, it is assumed that deviations from the ideal of the "divine child" according to Maria Montessori represent a disorder. This can be remedied through the use of learning methods and Montessori learning materials. In addition to Montessori materials, our online range offers you other interdisciplinary teaching aids!
What makes Montessori materials special?
Montessori materials are far more than just teaching and learning aids; after all, they fulfill an educational purpose. To emphasize its special educational character, it is referred to as "material". It was developed with the aim of increasing children's enjoyment of learning. Montessori material is made from high-quality wood, which not only emphasizes its educational properties, but is also sustainable and benefits the environment.
Maria Montessori herself defined the requirements that materials for Montessori education must fulfill. They should have certain properties such as durability and the use of natural materials. Furthermore, it should enable children to exercise self-control and be appealing to the little ones in terms of design and appearance. The Montessori material is designed to be simple, but not boring. This allows children to use their imagination and be creative. The simple design of the material means that the children are not given a fixed framework. This feature encourages them to think creatively. They have to get used to it first. The best way to introduce children to Montessori materials is therefore with sensory materials.
Where is Montessori material used?
Montessori materials were invented by Maria Montessori and have been continuously developed ever since. Montessori learning materials are traditionally divided into five areas:
- Exercises for daily life
- Sensory material - to stimulate all five senses
- Material for mathematics
- Language material
- Material for cosmic education
The presentation of the material is decisive for its positive effect. In elementary school and kindergarten, the Montessori materials and games should be placed on the shelves within easy reach of the little ones, so that children can choose independently what they want to work with. The visual appearance and positioning in the room give the material a stimulating character without forcing it. This has a fascinating effect on the little ones. Important: Each Montessori material should only be available once. This teaches children consideration and empathy. This will make their lives much easier later on.
If the children show an interest in certain Montessori materials, teachers will introduce them to the teaching material in a child-friendly way. In case that a child wants to spend more time with the material, the teacher withdraws after the introduction. However, the child should continue to be supervised while learning.
What Montessori materials are available?
The sensory material is usually the first learning toy used in the Montessori kindergarten. It impresses with its simple structure and can therefore be easily explained. The sensory material includes, for example, color charts and geometric shapes. The Montessori teaching materials for kindergarten are ideal for experiencing and learning about colors, shapes and bodies. Sensory materials can be used to learn to grasp more complex relationships. It also trains cognitive skills and fine motor skills. The Montessori teaching materials and exercises are ideally suited for toddlers and children with disabilities and support their development.
Das Montessori math material is preferably used in schools. Math materials such as the hundreds board or the wooden number card set are well suited for primary school children. They not only promote mathematical understanding, but also fine motor skills, as the children have to place the numbers and shapes. Montessori math frames support the first attempts at arithmetic and help with counting. The purpose of Montessori math material is to explain and illustrate abstract concepts such as numbers, quantities, multiplication and first arithmetic steps in an understandable way. Geometric shapes are also learnt through play. This is achieved by combining visual and tactile elements, which is inherent in Montessori materials.
Montessori materials are also used for other subjects such as German. For example, language material can be helpful for learning parts of speech with the help of a part of speech template.
Montessori materials have also been developed for lessons in biology, history and geography. Amongst other things, we have a wooden Earth Age chain. The 15-metre long chain shows the age of the earth in a clear and child-friendly way. Each wooden bead represents one million years. Also included are cards with the ages of the earth, various animals and plants. The chain is divided into different sections of the earth's history by colour. For example, the small red section at the end represents the history of mankind. This allows pupils to expand their knowledge of the world.
What Montessori material promotes
There are many advantages of using Montessori education and materials. According to Maria Montessori's philosophy, the pure joy of learning is an important part of every child's being. The deeper meaning behind this is to support and encourage our youngest children in the development of a calm and balanced personality. The prerequisite for this is guidance with respect and consideration for the children.
Children should learn at their own pace and according to their own interests. In doing so, they experience self-confidence and independence and internalise what they have learned. Montessori materials stimulate all five senses. This supports children in their development. In addition to the use of materials, this is achieved through practical life exercises. The TimeTEX frame with shoe laces, for example, promotes concentration and fine motor skills.
Montessori kindergarten children learn by imitation how to dress themselves, wash themselves, help set the table and so on. The little ones can often choose who they want to work with and what they want to work on.
For Maria Montessori, the main aim was to give children the opportunity to develop themselves in a prepared environment. The little ones can decide for themselves what they want to do and when. Whether they want to use learning materials and if so, which ones. It is possible, for example, that a child is not interested in the math material on offer, but instead develops their math skills in other activities. Nevertheless, Montessori materials can be a wonderful supplement to conventional teaching materials. You will certainly not regret buying Montessori materials!
